A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Frost is a very active environment. You will find a constant schedule of performances, forums and master classes by school and visiting internationally artists from all genres. Our concept is to train musicians, in all aspects of our profession, for careers in the 21st century. You will learn broad based musical skills that will enable you to become the best musician you can be. You will leave the Frost School having the ability to survive in a multi-genre world.
Yes – scholarships, financial aid, and assistantships are available.
Our Experiential Music Curriculum is an innovative and effective preparation for a future musical career that is not limited in scope.
We have now moved into our new state-of-the-art studios. The new facility has large, acoustically superb studios in a “latest technology” environment.
We have a new partnership with Universal Music. Among possible projects with Universal will be recordings, films, and educational events.
The Oboe Studio has a target number of students so that everyone has the opportunity of performing in the ensembles. All oboe students perform in the major Frost Ensembles. Lessons are one hour per week and there are weekly classes for reedmaking and studio class. We also have weekly Forums for each major. The studio has gouging machines, processing tools and English Horns for student use. I am very proud of my studio on many levels. New students are relieved to find that there is a definite sense of community and support amongst our students. We are not “cut-throat.”
Here are some items of specific interest to our students:
Our Experiential Music Curriculum offers an innovative “hands on” approach to learning musical skills related to ear training. In addition to new approaches to standard musical training you will learn to use solfege and improvisation as ways of better understanding music and developing your skills. This is done in small groups with individual attention.
Through the EMC you will have opportunities to take courses that will help you in learning how to be your own career manager.
The Mancini Institute is now housed at UM. Through Mancini there are many “crossover” performance events. Major international artists are brought in throughout the year. Our TA’s are Mancini Fellows, performing in these events, as well as the tradition ensembles.
Our new curriculum of graduate courses is designed to meet YOUR needs in coming to grips with an ever-changing music profession.
Our Frost School of Music website - www.miami.edu/frost - has complete information and downloadable forms. I feel that a visit our campus can more accurately help you assess our programs and faculty, if you can arrange it. A visit with me will enable you to make a more informed decision about studying with me. The interaction between student and teacher is one of your major considerations.
